April 21, 2025

Spencer Fane LLP is pleased to announce Yara Calcaño joined the firm’s Houston office as an associate in the Health Care practice group.

Yara vigorously defends health care providers facing medical malpractice claims and related complaints filed with the Texas Medical Board, employing her intricate knowledge of health care systems and regulatory complexities to protect physicians and other providers while preserving their reputations. She boasts state and federal litigation experience in New York, Washington, D.C., and Texas.

Early in her career, Yara defended tenants and homeowners in securing housing in New York City. In Texas, she defended private and nonprofit companies in home insurance claims before ultimately focusing her practice on health care law.

“We look forward to welcoming Yara to Houston as the firm’s Texas market continues to expand,” said Brian Zimmerman, Office Managing Partner for Spencer Fane in Houston. “As we prioritize meeting client needs via highly intentional growth, attorneys like Yara – who possess the firm’s passion for exceptional client service and vigorous courtroom advocacy – reinforce our robust health care practice and the broader litigation team.”

Yara completed her bachelor’s degree at Rutgers University and later earned her Juris Doctor at the American University Washington College of Law.

Prior to and while in law school, Yara worked across diverse, public-sector organizations rooted in human rights and justice initiatives, including the Center for Reproductive Rights in New York City, the Disability Rights Law Clinic and Center for Justice and International Law in Washington, D.C., and as a United Nations International Law Commission Special Assistant to Commissioner Claudio Grossman in Geneva, Switzerland, among other roles.
