John Watson Considers Future of the EPA Methane Rule for Law360

January 6, 2025

Spencer Fane attorney John Watson’s article, Post-Election Implications for The EPA’s Methane Rules, was recently published in Law360.

The piece is an updated version of John’s October firm blog post and explores the status of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)’s Methane Rule. The Rule aims to reduce harmful air pollution stemming from oil and natural gas operations and has been subject to multiple challenges. As John explains, the U.S. Supreme Court has kept the Rule alive through its October 2024 order denying requests to stay its implementation, but its status is still subject to change.

“The rules are still in jeopardy, however. SCOTUS’ decision leaves the rules in effect for now, but they could ultimately be overturned through legal proceedings in lower courts,” John said. He also discussed the potential impact of Donald Trump’s upcoming second presidential term.

At Spencer Fane, John leverages his in-depth commercial trial and litigation knowledge to represent clients in a variety of complex commercial cases, including breach of contract actions, real estate and land development, special district litigation, construction disputes between contractors and subcontractors, securities litigation, public land and natural resources law, mining, oil and gas, wildlife, toxic tort, Superfund, and air, water, and waste environmental cases.
