Spencer Fane attorney Christine Chasse was a recent guest author for Law360’s ongoing Expert Analysis series.
Her article, Navigating HHS’ New Reproductive Healthcare Privacy Rule, originated as a firm blog post. In it, Christine explored an extensive U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office for Civil Rights’ Final Rule that provides additional HIPAA protections with regard to reproductive health information. She outlined the rule and its potential benefits, answered preliminary questions regulated entities might have, and provided compliance action items for stakeholders.
“The final rule was born out of concerns that recent legal developments may erode patients’ trust in the healthcare system,” Christine said, referring to landmark U.S. Supreme Court decisions like Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization and Planned Parenthood v. Casey. “The final rule aims to balance these legal shifts by explicitly limiting the scope of the privacy rule’s law enforcement exception.”
At Spencer Fane, Christine collaborates with small and large institutions in industries such as health care, finance, and education. She utilizes her extensive experience to assess and successfully resolve claims of professional liability, and wrongful death for hospital systems, and providers. Christine also guides her clients with regulatory and compliance enforcement actions, as well as guide through cybersecurity, data privacy, and cyber incident response matters such as actual or potential HIPAA breaches and data security incidents.
