David Waters Featured in NextGen Leaders Profile

July 18, 2024

Spencer Fane attorney David Waters was recently profiled in the Kansas City Business Journal for his 2024 NextGen Leaders honor. David was officially honored on June 18 at the J. Rieger & Co. Distillery in Kansas City, Missouri.

The profile included a Q&A that touched on everything from how David balances both a busy legal practice and serving as mayor of Westwood, Kansas, to how he challenges himself to step outside his comfort zone.

“It can be a challenge for me to not go back into my internal shell and my introvert self. I think working through that has made me better at kind of fighting against my own instincts at times,” Waters shared. “Trusting a process, and trusting a process that is inclusive of others, and not just building things up in my own headspace.”

The program recognizes budding talent in the business community and connects the emerging leaders while helping build their knowledge and skill sets. A panel of judges selected the 25 NextGen Leaders based on their accomplishments, talents, and drive.

At Spencer Fane, David helps a diverse network of clients in the governmental, business, health care, and hospitality industries successfully handle the full range of legal needs related to successful real estate transactions, ensuring projects stay on time and on budget. He also currently serves as the Overland Park Office Managing Partner.

David’s municipal and public law work extends to local cities and school districts, and he counsels these clients with respect to governmental authority and procedures, economic development, legislative policy, and administrative enforcement. Uniquely, he also serves as an elected official and is currently the mayor for Westwood, Kansas, in the Kansas City metro area. He is a member of the board of directors for the City Attorneys Association of Kansas and is President for the Kansas Mayors Association.
