November 20, 2020

The American College of Bankruptcy (ACB) recently announced that Spencer Fane attorney Eric Johnson will be inducted as a Fellow of the College in March, 2020 in Washington, DC. Eric currently serves as the group leader of Spencer Fane’s  Bankruptcy, Restructuring and Creditors’ Rights Group.

The American College of Bankruptcy is an honorary public service association of the United States and international insolvency professionals who are invited to join as Fellows based on a proven record of the highest standards of expertise, leadership, integrity, professionalism, scholarship, and service to the bankruptcy practice and to their communities. The College facilitates the effective domestic and cross-border application of bankruptcy and insolvency laws and the administration of justice in the courts through, among other activities, conducting professional educational programs, sponsoring the publication of scholarly reports, and maintaining the National Bankruptcy Archives. The College also funds projects that improve the quality of bankruptcy law and practice, as well as access to justice, in particular through grants by its affiliated Foundation to pro bono legal service programs. The Foundation is believed to be the single largest financial supporter of pro bono bankruptcy services in the United States, contributing over $3 million since 2012. In all of its work, the College is dedicated to enhancing professionalism, scholarship, diversity, and service in bankruptcy and insolvency law and practice.

There are thirty-seven nominees being honored and recognized for their professional excellence and exceptional contributions to the fields of bankruptcy and insolvency. The nominees reside in twenty-three states, including the District of Columbia, and two foreign countries.  Nominees are extended an invitation to join based on a sustained record of achievement. Candidates are selected by the College’s Board of Regents from recommendations of Circuit Admissions Councils in each federal judicial circuit and Committees for Judicial and International Fellows.

ACB Fellows include judges, lawyers, international fellows, accountants, corporate turnaround specialists, government officials and other professionals who are experts in the field of bankruptcy and insolvency. Criteria for selection as a Fellow of the College include: the highest standards of professionalism, ethics, character, integrity, professional expertise and leadership contributing to the enhancement of bankruptcy and insolvency law and practice; sustained evidence of scholarship, teaching, lecturing or writing on bankruptcy or insolvency; community service; and commitment to elevate knowledge and understanding of the profession and public respect for the practice.

“Eric’s induction into the College only solidifies his reputation for holding himself to the highest standards in the practice of bankruptcy law and in leading others in the local and national bankruptcy bar to the same,” said James Lodoen, Spencer Fane Partner and ABC Fellow. “As the leader of the firm’s Bankruptcy team, he encompasses the College’s ideals in his daily practice and instills them within the group.”

In addition to heading up Spencer Fane’s Bankruptcy Group, Eric currently serves on the American Bankruptcy Institute Board of Directors, the advisory board for the Midwestern Bankruptcy Institute, an annual program jointly sponsored by the ABI and the University of Missouri – Kansas City, and the chair of the Missouri Bar’s Business/Corporate Division. Eric is also a member of the panel of Chapter 7 trustees for the Western District of Missouri and is currently serving as a federal equity receiver.
